Letter: It’s not about the baby. It’s about the child

This Friday, June 21, 2019 photo, shows the exterior of the Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, the state's last operating abortion clinic, in St. Louis. Missouri's health department said on Friday that it won’t renew the abortion license for the state’s lone clinic, but the St. Louis Planned Parenthood affiliate will be allowed to temporarily perform the procedure under a court order. Get real. Abortion is not about a woman’s right to have a baby, it’s about a woman’s ability to raise a child, or a child’s ability to survive debilitating and serious birth or congenital defects.

It’s about our ability to provide pre and post health care for all mothers and infants, to provide mental health care and rehabilitation for mothers who face serious difficulties.

It’s not about the baby. It’s about the child, child care, schools, affordable housing, or even just getting enough to eat.

Or how about ensuring the safety of the child and mother by better protective social services. We all read horrific stories about child abuse – seriously horrific. Not all people are good parents. It’s not about the baby. It’s about the child.
