Letter: Player’s love for his mother is his greatest achievement

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes forward Donnie Tillman (3) tires to work the ball inside, as against the Brigham Young Cougars forward Connor Harding defends, in basketball action in the Beehive Classic, between against the Brigham Young Cougars and Utah Utes, a the Vivint Smart Home Arena, Saturday December 8, 2018.

An uplifting and inspirational article appeared an unlikely place, Page 1 of the June 8 sports section of The Salt Lake Tribune. The headline, “Tillman leaving Utes for personal reasons.”

It describes how the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year, Donnie Tillman, is taking a leave of absence from his very promising collegiate basketball career (for at least the next season) to be with his single mom, who is dealing with the effects of epilepsy in Las Vegas.

Whatever successes this young man achieves in basketball and life, few will compare to the dignity and courage of this expression of love for his mother.
