Letter: Not vaccinating is clueless and selfish

(Elaine Thompson | AP file photo) A vial of a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at a clinic in Vashon Island, Wash. On Thursday, May 30, 2019, U.S. health officials reported this year’s U.S. measles epidemic surpassed a 25-year-old record, and experts say it’s not clear when the wave of illnesses will stop. There were 971 cases so far this year, eclipsing the 963 measles illnesses reported for all of 1994.

Years ago when there were no vaccines for any of the diseases, we watched how some got so sick and died or were left with disabilities. I was glad to stand in line once vaccines became available to protect me and my children, and later my grandchildren.

Using autism as a reason for not vaccinating is so ridiculous, and using freedom of religion and choice as an excuse is more selfish idealism. What would have happened if none of the millions didn't get vaccinated when it was offered years ago? Our country would be in a world of hurt and devastation. We made it possible for all of you selfish people to grow up healthy. What you are doing by not vaccinating is a form of abuse of your children, and you are putting the rest of the people of Utah and the country at risk. Start making the right and just choice by getting vaccinated. Stop being selfish and clueless by trying to prove an unrealistic point of view.
