Letter: A modest proposal for ‘pro-life’ legislators

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) A rally in the Capitol Rotunda in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, was part of a nationwide series of protests to bring attention as a number of conservative states pass laws aimed at getting abortion before the U.S. Supreme Court.

I have a modest proposal for the legislators opposing abortion, no matter what the circumstances.

I propose that:

  1. Every “pro-life” legislator take full responsibility for the life — that is, the love, nurturing care, education, medical expenses and overall well-being — of every unwanted child in the legislator’s state.

  2. In the event of a rape and subsequent pregnancy of a pubescent girl, the “pro-life” legislator assume responsibility for not only the birth expenses, but the economic, psychiatric and rehabilitative care the young mother and her child will most likely need — probably for many years.

These guardians of the “right to life” ignore the loss of life, often with U.S. complicity, throughout the world. This is their chance to make it right.
