Letter: Utah should have a lottery. We could call it the ‘gentile tax’

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune "How many numbers do I pick?" asked Cindy Birchell of Provo who admitted that she does not know how to "play" the Powerball lottery, but with the help of the La Tienda convenience store cashier in Franklin, Idaho, Birchell walked out of the store with tickets to the $700million Powerball jackpot, January 7, 2015.

The major tax shift in Utah has stalled, as so many businesses are against the service tax. What to do?

The easiest solution would be to implement a lottery. I find it hard to believe that Utah doesn’t care that Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado and our other neighbors make so much money off our Utah residents who play the lottery in their states. If it was brought into Utah, that money would stay here and help us.

The people who would play the lottery here would be the same people who travel to other states to play the lottery there. I realize the LDS Church is against gambling, but they could keep a closer eye on their flock if they brought the games home.

Please, let us gentiles help the state with this self-inflicted tax. We could call it a “gentile tax.”
