Letter: Thanks to Sen. Mike Lee for moving to end the conflict in Yemen

(Tom Williams | CQ Roll Call via AP file photo) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, attends a markup of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Dirksen Building on September 13, 2018, where Republicans voted to move the committee vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to Sept. 20.

I am extremely grateful to Sen. Mike Lee for being an original co-sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution 7, which calls for the removal of U.S. armed forces from Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress.

The war in Yemen is a humanitarian disaster. Save the Children estimates that since the start of the war, 85,000 children under the age of 5 may have already died of starvation. According to U.N. News, about 14 million people, half of Yemen’s population, are at risk of famine.

Our world has quite a few trouble spots. Surely, Yemen is one of them.

We need to stop our military support to this conflict. We need to turn to diplomacy and the rule of law. We need to respond with compassion to those in need. We need to affirm better choices than to fuel more violence.

I hope Sen. Mitt Romney will join Lee to help our world become less violent.
