Letter: Democracy or theocracy?

(Scott Sommerdorf | Tribune file photo) The Salt Lake LDS Temple and the Utah State Capitol are seen together, Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Democracy: A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Theocracy: A system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god.

Based on the past, and refreshed by the Utah Legislature’s rejection of the voters’ approval of Propositions 2 and 3, under which form of government we live is glaringly apparent.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
