Letter: A Utah flag with a red star?
(Tribune file photo) In this July 24, 2017, file photo the Utah state flag waves in the morning sun at the start of the Days of '47 Parade in Salt Lake City. A Utah state lawmaker is leading an effort to redesign a clunky Utah state flag that critics have called an "S.O.B.", seal on a bedsheet. State Rep. Steve Handy recently announced he will introduce a bill creating a flag review commission that could ultimately scrap the turbulent form of the 100-year-old flag for a new, simpler one.
It would be bewildering if it were not the normal for the Utah Legislature.
This is exactly what we need — a new Utah state flag with a red star on it, which is right in line with the policies of the current resident of the White House and our Legislature.
I have two souvenir hats with red stars on them, one from communist China and one from communist Cuba. And then there was the red star on the airplanes of the Soviet Union I saw last night while watching “World War II in Color.”
How about replacing the beehive with an oil derrick and replacing the red star with a lump of coal? That would be a more accurate depiction of the Legislature’s view of the state of Utah, though they and the current resident of the White House might also like the hammer and sickle emoji.
