Letter: Don’t take the money
(Steve Griffin | Tribune file photo) Lights on the Utah State Capitol glow as the sun sets Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017.
Lee Davidson's recent Salt Lake Tribune article on who gives to campaigns not surprisingly found that 82 percent of campaign donations comes from special interests.
Legislators quoted in the article all deny that the money buys votes, saying everything as silly as “they think you’re doing a good job” to the common “their donations don’t guarantee a vote.”
If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t do it. The perception out here in voter-land is that their donations do guarantee a vote. Why else would the Utah Legislature be synonymous with corruption to a vast number of residents? There’s an easy way to change that perception: Stop taking the money.
