Letter: Immigrants — they get the job done

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A large crowd gathers at the Utah Capitol on Saturday, June 30, 2018, to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies that have led to the separation of migrant families. More than 750 locations around the country planned to participate in the 'Families Belong Together' event, including at the nations capitol.

In the debate over whether immigrants are good or bad, I can speak to my personal experience as an American with rental properties.

I had immigrants from Iraq who were approved by American immigration and enabled by Catholic Services, a wonderful organization based upon Christian principles that are a refreshing contrast to the political principles at play today. The renters were reliable, hard-working people of impeccable character who were respectful and thankful for their opportunity to be here.

I have another renter who was brought here from India by his employer to work and spend and pay taxes here. He loves America, travels, buys products and supports our economy. He pays his rent on time and is an asset to our neighborhood.

His visa was not renewed, so now he has to go back to India and spend his American dollars and pay taxes there. India’s gain, our loss. Why did we choose to lose?
