Letter: Mike Lee’s ideas about federalism are over the top

(Tom Williams | CQ Roll Call | The Associated Press) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, attends a markup of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Dirksen Building on September 13, 2018, where Republicans voted to move the committee vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to September 20.

Regarding Sen. Mike Lee’s recent remarks to the Federal Society, one wonders, had our junior senator lived in the late 1800s, wearing a three-corner hat and wig, would he have voted to retain the Articles of Confederation?

No Interstate Commerce Commission? No federal Interstate Highway System? This is his idea of 21st-century federalism?

During his first campaign, a moderate Republican friend told me, “His father must be turning in his grave with Mike’s over-the-top conservative ideas.” I too wonder what esteemed former U.S. Solicitor General Rex Lee might think.
