Letter: Hatch’s legacy is set in stone

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Salt Lake Chamber honors Sen. Orrin G. Hatch as the 39th Giant in Our City, in honor of his service and professional achievement, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Grand America Hotel.

Dear Orrin Hatch,

You will soon leave the Senate with a distinctive legacy. You have decided to support a Supreme Court nominee who repeatedly lied to your face during the hearing, telling you that his high school bio was full of warm fuzzies of his friend Renate, and that his coded bio had nothing to do with sex and debauchery.

You have not only decided to support a president who has lied over 5,000 times, you have declared that he will be known as one of the greatest presidents of all time.

You have called those who disagree with you “dumbass” and told protesters to “grow up.”

I remember a time when you reached across the aisle and worked with your friend Ted Kennedy to make the world a better place and provide health care for the needy. Now you have given the rich the greatest of tax cuts and we can no longer support the CHIP program that you and Ted developed.

That old memory will fade, Orrin, because you have decided that the GOP is your tribe and not the American people. Your last six years have been the most divisive in our nation’s history.

You played a leading role and have set your legacy in stone.

Lisa Anderson, West Point
