Letter: We must have a balance of power. If you love your country, vote Democrat

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) The rally entitled "#SummerResistance Day of Action: Protecting DACA," put on by the Utah State Democratic Party and Utah State Democratic Hispanic Caucus at the Centro Civico Mexicano, Sunday, August 20, 2017.

To all voters, young and old: If you haven’t submitted your voting ballot, I urge you to do so today. I believe that in my lifetime (83 years) never before has an election been so important!

Our Founding Fathers determined that there be checks and balances in our government, yet today none are in place because of Republican control of all three branches: Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court. At present, Republicans, for whatever reason, endorse everything that the current president says or does, with absolutely no regard of the consequences.

Alarmingly, Mr.Trump promotes so much hatred, fear and suspicion, and tells so many lies on a daily basis, that we are becoming desensitized to their effect on our country.

We as citizens have a right and responsibility to elect men and women to go to Washington with a desire to work together, by negotiation and compromise, to accomplish what needs to be done for the good of the United States. We must have a balance of power, and to that end I am asking reasonable Republicans, Democrats and independents to achieve this, by coming together and choosing Democratic candidates in this election.

This, my fellow Americans, is what patriotism is all about: a love, a loyalty for our beloved country, above all else.

Lolita Hagio, St. George
