Letter: If only God had thought to capitalize ‘the Church’

(Jeremy Harmon | The Salt Lake Tribune) President Russell M. Nelson announces seven new temples, including one in Russia, during the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference on April 1, 2018.

President Russell M. Nelson is absolutely right to assert that our latter-day faith is correctly called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

However, I’d prefer that he stop mentioning that this full name was revealed by the Lord in the Doctrine and Covenants.

Here’s the problem: If we’re going to insist that we should follow the Doctrine and Covenants, some wise guy is going to point out that in the Doctrine and Covenants, whenever “the church” stands alone, the Lord always uses lowercase. Why is that a problem? Because today it is official Church policy to always write “the Church” as uppercase.

Personally, I’m OK with this inconsistency. By ignoring the Doctrine and Covenants and calling ourselves the Church, we're merely observing that today's Church and its members are more special than the Lord's lowercase church of past generations. They were losers!

Let’s face it, humility is way overrated. So don’t call today’s Church uppity, just call us Numero Uno!

On a related subject, if our Utes win the Pac-12 South this season, I’m going to call them “the Team.”
