I used to think I understood Republicans. I usually didn’t agree with them, but I understood their thinking. They cared about deficits, families and character, among other things. Now their values are a mystery.
When Donald Trump bragged about assaulting women and getting away with it, Republicans didn’t care. When he started stripping away regulations meant to protect us, like clean air and water, public lands, health care and education, they didn’t care.
He picked fights and insulted our oldest allies but praised murderous dictators, and they didn’t care. He even sided with Vladimir Putin over his own U.S. intelligence community’s findings. His loyalties are clear, and they are not for America.
One of the lowest points in our history is his manifestly inhumane, dehumanizing practice of separating children from parents crossing our border. History will remember Republicans as cowards for looking away when they could have stood against this atrocity. I doubt they care.
But now, the photo of two Trump supporters wearing T-shirts that say “I’d rather be Russian than Democrat” cleared everything up for me. They help him trash our country because the only guiding principle they have is hating Democrats more than they love America.
Pathetic.
