Letter: Find a way to preserve Japantown

(Rendering by The Ritchie Group) A rendering of The Ritchie Group's proposed Block 67 development in Salt Lake City, as though looking east from Vivint Smart Home Arena. Supporters of Japantown along 100 South fear the development could wipe out the historic cultural enclave.

I am a 12-year-old Boy Scout currently working on two merit badges that require me to attend a civic meeting. I was in attendance at the July 31 Salt Lake City Council meeting where the Block 67/Japantown zoning items were discussed.

Part of my requirement is to express my opinion to an editor of a local newspaper. I read your article, which helped me better understand the whole picture.

It is my opinion that Japantown should be enhanced and preserved for future generations like mine. I am of Japanese descent (third generation) and enjoy attending the festivals with my family. I understand the concerns of the community and the developer, and I hope that they commit to work together to improve Block 67 while preserving Japantown and its rich history. I think that if they do, they can create something very special for everyone to enjoy.

I look forward to reading a follow-up article after the next meeting takes place.
