Letter: Let’s hear some opinions from well-credentialed experts
In this July 30, 2018 photo, firefighters control the Tollgate Canyon fire as it burns near Wanship, Utah. Mitt Romney is calling for a high-tech early detection system and more logging to prevent wildfires ravaging the U.S. West. The Republican running for a U.S. Senate seat in his adopted home state of Utah said in an essay Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, that government can do more to prevent fires there and other places like California, which is fighting its largest wildfire in state history. Especially in light of recent downsizing (and I assumed, maximization of content), why did you publish Don Gale’s opinion on the editorial page Aug. 10?
His credentials are listed as “Don Gale believes thoughtful human beings should be just that — thoughtful.” Really? Well, me, too, but I don’t think my opinion (which would be based on at least as well-informed a background as his) should appear in the newspaper.
Yes, good points — use technology, thought, science, the military; you can say that about a lot of things, including any disaster relief efforts.
Next time, an opinion from someone in forest science or someone in government with a viewpoint why we are not doing such intuitive things would be much more appreciated.
