Letter: Many Utahns want to fund schools, but a gas tax is the wrong way to do it

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A Costco gas pump in Salt Lake in 2015.

Robert Gehrke, who usually is right on, missed the mark when he said ”Utahns don’t back education as strongly as they claim to” (July 5, 2018).

My understanding of the gas tax proposal, from reading Tribune articles, is that not all of the gas tax will go for education and the actual revenue raise for education is roughly half of that demanded by Our Schools Now. This is just one more ploy by our Legislature to avoid adequate funding for our most important need.

Had I been polled, I would have polled against the gas tax because I avidly support decent funding for education. This proposal dilutes needed funds for this very important budget item and allows our legislators, once again, to falsely claim they are listening to us.
