Letter: Thanks to Palmer DePaulis and his team for saving City and County Building

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune Mayor Jackie Biskupski and master stone mason Jeff Eakle maneuver a lift into place to set the final capstone Ð in Eakle's likeness Ð in completion of the Salt Lake City and County Building rehabilitation project, Wednesday, June 13, 2018. The two-year rehabilitation restored the buildingÕs stone facade, repaired windows, and performed a seismic upgrade of the historic building built in 1894.

The just-completed restoration work adds another chapter to the grand history of the Salt Lake City and County Building in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. I’m no historian, although I do want to honor the work of those who saved the building from demolition in the 1980s. With Palmer DePaulis in the lead and a majority of the City Council, the vote barely passed to issue a bond to save the building.

Were it not for DePaulis’ devotion to the preservation of the building and the team who worked to save it, we would not be celebrating the latest accomplishments as covered in your recent story. Thanks to everyone who saw the value in preserving this place, including Sydney Fonnesbeck, Al Haines, Phil Ericson, Burtch Beall and many more.

Nancy Boskoff, Salt Lake City
