Letter: GOP’s indifference to truth and character diminishes America

(Manuel Balce Ceneta | The Associated Press) President Donald Trump talks to visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in as he departs the White House in Washington, Tuesday, May 22, 2018.

Recently, according to the Washington Post, Donald Trump chalked up his 3,000th false or misleading statement since taking office. That’s 6.5 lies every, single, day. And, no, his loyal supporters don’t care. They just change the word “lies” to “alternative facts.” Problem solved.

But the real scandal isn’t Trump’s lying. The real scandal is that his base takes his lies and passes them on as fact. Fox News generously provides “talking points” for Trump’s followers and, like the good soldiers they are, they spread the word.

Erika Pimper’s letter suggested that Trump should be given credit for our low unemployment and good economy. Actually, that credit belongs to Trump’s predecessor. Trump inherited a healthy economy and it has continued to roll along. She says Trump kept his promises. No, he hasn’t. Check his speeches as a candidate to see his trail of broken promises. She also said his foreign policy is on a good track. In fact, the U.S. has abandoned its leadership position on the global stage under Trump.

Republicans, your indifference to truth and character diminishes America, your party — and yourselves.
