Letter: Democracy isn’t dead in Utah — Ghorbani’s challenge to Stewart is real

(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, takes questions from the audience during his town hall meeting at the West Valley City Hall in West Valley City Wednesday May 2, 2018.

In his May 4 column, Paul Rolly rightly calls out Rep. Chris Stewart for dodging questions at his recent town hall in West Valley City. I agree with Rolly: Stewart is unresponsive and disrespectful to his constituents. His fawning endorsements of the president’s dangerous nonsense are appalling.

But Rolly is wrong when he says, “Democracy is dead in Utah.” Stewart is not running unopposed. He has a smart, credible and savvy opponent in Shireen Ghorbani. And The Tribune commits a consistent disservice to citizens by not giving Ghorbani more coverage.

Pay attention to this stellar candidate. She’s out there listening to the people while Stewart is grandstanding on Fox News. She just may catch the arrogant incumbent unawares and prove that democracy is alive and well in Utah.
