Letter: Teens, instead of marching, start protesting at home and on the way to church

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) West High School sophomore Andie Madsen, 15, returns to classes after a student walkout in Salt Lake, Wednesday morning, March 14, 2018. Students in Utah and around the country planned the large-scale coordinated demonstration to protest gun violence and memorialize victims of February's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

I want to remind and suggest something to all those teens working to change the hearts and minds of Utah’s “head in the sand” legislators.

I hope many of you understand the problem starts at home. It’s the votes of many of your parents that put those same legislators in office.

Instead of marching, start protesting at the dining room table and on the way to church. Stop helping around the house and doing homework. Just refuse to stop talking about the issue until your parents pledge to either stay home during elections or vote for candidates who support common-sense gun control.

It’s the possibility of not being re-elected that changes hearts and minds of Utah legislators. Vote if you are 18, and if you’re not 18, volunteer to help candidates who support your positions.

But remember, you all are experts at driving your parents crazy. Please, in support of a good cause, put that expertise to work.
