Letter: Thirst for profits and empire brings about a ‘spiritual death’

Do I understand this correctly? U.S. political elites claim outrage over an alleged but unproven chemical weapons attack? They are bent on going to war with Syria (and Russia?), yet they support the ongoing genocide in Yemen. They expressed approval as Israeli soldiers shot through the towering electrified fence that encages Gaza, killing 34 unarmed Palestinian protesters.

President Trump gloats about attacking Syria with “nice, new and smart” missiles.

What he doesn’t mention is the hundreds of millions in cost to the American taxpayer. In every major U.S. city, there are families living on the streets. We can’t afford to help them, but we can buy shiny new missiles.

Our schools can’t afford psychological help for troubled students, so they are dismissed from school. Their problems become the justice system’s problems.

The sad truth is that these ruling elites are about profits and empire. They care little about people. They have reached the spiritual condition predicted by Martin Luther King Jr. 51 years ago: “A nation that continues, year after year, to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift, is approaching spiritual death.”
