Letter: If this is a drained swamp, we need to rethink who we vote for

(J. Scott Applewhite | The Associated Press) In this Jan. 18, 2017 file photo, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator-designate, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt is seen on Capitol Hill in Washington, at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Pruitt has spent millions of dollars in taxpayer funds on unprecedented security precautions that include a full-time detail of 20 armed officers, according to agency sources and documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

If this is what a drained swamp looks like, I think we should reconsider voting for qualified politicians. Pruitt is trying to dismantle the EPA while staying in a condo owned by oil lobbyists. So it’s no surprise that now Trump wants to rollback fuel efficiency standards so that more profit can be made from SUV sales while our children breathe their exhaust. General Motors’ report supporting relaxing these CAFE standards was written by the Heartland Institute, a well-funded propaganda arm of the Koch brothers, Exxon, and the American Petroleum Institute.

How are the children’s interests going to be protected from lobbyists with Mar-a-Lago memberships? We “regular” people can’t take them on financially, but like the kids marching for their lives against the gun industry it’ll take group efforts by a majority of voters.

Murray Energy’s huge campaign contributions makes him think that taxpayers should bail out his business, but we will create the political will to make Congress pass legislation promoting clean energy not coal burning. After we get a price on carbon you’ll have to sell your coal to auto companies making carbon fibers so they can produce the clean, efficient vehicles us regular people would love to buy.
