Letter: I support Utah’s Count My Vote initiative

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) Former Utah Representative Fred Cox tries to get recognized in order to ask a question during the Count My Vote public hearing at the Whitmore Library in Cottonwood Heights. The Count My Vote ballot initiative seeks to select party nominees through a direct primary, and totally eliminate the traditional caucus-convention system, Friday, October 27, 2017.

On March 21, at our Community Council meeting, a just-elected Republican Caucus Delegate made a case for the caucus system of electing candidates. He said that as a committed delegate, he can speak to Gov. Gary Herbert, and to all the potential candidates, and he felt that caucus delegates had the best information and judgment to select a candidate for office.

It occurred to me that our Utah Republican Party had not informed the voters as to the hazards of electing Donald Trump as president. Now we have an uninformed, erratic, biased and sexually predatory man in charge of our nation.

I did not sign our speaker’s petition to do away with Count My Vote. I did sign the petition promoting Count My Vote, which instituted direct primary elections, because I want to be able to directly petition for a candidate for office in Utah.

Utah’s SB54 (the Count My Vote Bill) was signed into law in March 2014, permitting any voter to weigh in on primary elections. It is up to us to make informed choices, sign a petition for a candidate of our choice and go vote as you see fit, regardless of party affiliation.
