Letter: As a Republican, I’m disgusted at GOP attempts to renege on the compromise of Count My Vote

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) Former Utah Rep. Fred Cox tries to get recognized in order to ask a question during the Count My Vote public hearing at the Whitmore Library in Cottonwood Heights, Friday, Oct. 27, 2017. The Count My Vote ballot initiative seeks to select party nominees through a direct primary, in addition to the traditional caucus-convention system.

As a lifelong partisan Republican, former Republican state legislator and former member of the Republican State Central Committee, I cannot adequately express my disgust with the current central committee’s continuing efforts to renege on the compromise of SB54 (Count My Vote) and to thwart the obvious will of the Republican electorate.

They seem to have forgotten who is responsible for electing Republicans in Utah. I, for one, have contributed my last dollar to the party (including check-a-buck on my state tax return) until the central committee and other party leaders stop wasting money on lawsuits and accept the overwhelming will of the Republican electorate.
