Letter: The Constitution is amendable; here are ways to reduce gun violence in America

(Manuel Valdes | The Associated Press) Students at Roosevelt High School take part in a protest against gun violence Wednesday, March 14, 2018, in Seattle. Politicians in Washington state are joining students who walked out of class to protest against gun violence. It was part of a nationwide school walkout that calls for stricter gun laws following the massacre of 17 people at a Florida high school.

Following the Constitution dogmatically is as ridiculous and foolish as following one political party dogmatically.

The Constitution is a good governing document, but it was written 231 years ago; we shouldn’t follow it without question. We have made large advancements in technology, science, medicine and our basic understanding of reality. With this advanced and modern understanding of the world, we should be able to change the Constitution accordingly.

I propose four key points that would greatly reduce gun violence in America without banning guns.

1. Raise the age to buying any firearms to 25. Modern science has shown that our brains are not fully developed until about that age.
2. Universal background checks. This should be bipartisan; let’s make sure violent people and people with specific mental conditions don’t have access to guns.
3. Universal health care. This includes mental health. No need to say more.
4. Mandatory firearms training. You buy a gun, you are required to take a basic course that teaches safety and mechanics.

Gun deaths will be greatly reduced.
