So the land barons in our Legislature have made another land grab? No surprise there, but I have additional reasons for objecting to SB234.
Utah already has a robust import/export industry. Customs law already allows for bypassing the paperwork at ports of entry/export. The Customs Automated Commercial System permits processing to be handled in any U.S. port remotely from any other U.S. port.
Let the economic development group in Utah work with the industry to market Utah as a place of doing business utilizing the vast number of excellent third-party logistics providers that exist already, and which are heavily invested in warehouse space, technology and personnel. Market this port without usurping these same providers by building competitive warehouses and directing business to a specific parcel of land.
