Letter: These are not “donations” — they are bribes

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Congresswoman Mia Love speaks to the Salt Lake Tribune editorial board Thursday Feb. 22 2018.

Regarding the article, “Mia Love is not on board with arming teachers…” (February 23, 2018), Courtney Tanner did not report the whole story. Mia Love said she received $3,000 in donations from the NRA. However, according FEC information (Feb. 1, 2018), she has accepted $93,119 from gun rights advocates (opensecrets.org; credit: Center for Responsive Politics.)

These are not “donations.” They are bribes. She voted to relax gun restrictions for those with mental illness and voted for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. Many claim that these horrific mass shootings are a result of mental illness, yet Love has made it easier for these individuals to access firearms. The Reciprocity Act would allow those with concealed carry permits to cross state lines. This sounds okay on the surface, but keep in mind that concealed carry regulations vary dramatically from state to state, and this act would denigrate the rights of states opting for stricter rules.

The only meaningful common denominator in these horrific and preventable shootings is guns. In addition to strict background checks, we need to ban assault rifles — both on the federal level. Anything less is continuing to be complicit. Our children’s lives are at stake.
