Letter: Innovations has been a blessing and I stand with Ken Grover

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Principal Ken Grover shows the atrium area of the soon to open Innovations High School at 1700 South and State Street. The new building will connect to the Salt Lake Community College campus next door where high school students can take advantage of the library and even some college classes.

I support Ken Grover and Innovations Early College High School. My son is about to graduate from Innovations with acceptance to three universities. Much of that success stems from personal support from Mr. Grover. When my son was struggling with the social and emotional challenges of high school, Mr. Grover was there. And Mr. Grover was there to recognize his successes.

Innovations has been a blessing for my son and others who would struggle in Salt Lake City’s traditional schools. Innovations allows flexibility to work quickly through easier classes and take more time on more difficult ones. His teachers and mentors have given him far more personal attention than could be expected where classes exceed 35 students.

Of course there have been challenges. It isn’t easy to balance allowing students to proceed at their own pace and ensuring completion. But the school has made great strides.

The articles do not assert that Mr. Grover misused district funds for his personal benefit. Any alleged “improprieties” were to fund the program. Apparently the district isn’t happy that instead of spending money on sports, Mr. Grover is spending money allowing students to take college classes.

I can live with that choice.
