Letter: That's one untrustworthy legislative team

(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Speaker of the House Greg Hughes and his wife Krista, left, and Senate President Wayne Niederhauser and his wife Melissa, stand and applaud as Gov. Gary Herbert and First Lady Jeanette Herbert enter the Utah House of Representatives prior to the governor's State of the State address in Salt Lake City Wednesday January 24, 2018.

In 2015 and earlier, relocation of the prison was beginning, headed by Sen. Wayne Niederhauser who, incidentally, was put in his position by then-Sen. Al Mansell. At that time, coincidently, Niederhauser had acres of property adjacent to the current prison site and Mansell would probably be the contractor for the new developments there.

Along come Reps. Jerry Stevenson, Brad Wilson and Greg Hughes, who stated the costs to replace the prison at $550 million, knowing that wouldn’t be possible, and sold the idea to the legislators and senators. Then the prison relocation committee, which, surprisingly, had two members that were put on it by Neiderhauser, pushes the idea to relocate it west of the airport, where the land is unstable.

Now we get the figure of $850 million, which someone probably knew of in the beginning but kept it quiet to push the relocation through. What a great Republican team we have here in Utah.

By the way, where did the .05 cent per gallon gas tax go? Into the general fund?
