Letter: Terminate Goodell upon completion of present contract

(Bruce Kluckhohn | The Associated Press) In this Oct. 15, 2017, file photo, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell watches from the sidelines before an NFL football game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers in Minneapolis. Goodell has signed a five-year contract extension to keep him as commissioner of the NFL through 2024. A memo from the NFL's compensation committee to team owners and obtained by The Associated Press confirms that Goodell and committee chairman Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, have signed the extension. Goodell took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006.

Ladies and gentlemen of the NFL compensation committee, thank you for joining this teleconference. I know you are all very busy people. I appreciate the time you have allotted me on such short notice.

The subject we will discuss is the recent proposal of a new contract for Roger Goodell, our commissioner. His request for $50 million per year, also a lifetime health care policy for himself and his family, also private jet travel for life, I believe to be outrageous for a man who in fact is nothing more than a highly compensated clerk.

There are many people I am aware of capable of doing the position for $15 million or $20 million. Roger needs to understand he is not making the contribution of a Tom Brady or an Alex Smith. They both contribute value to the league, they are not simply overhead, and do their jobs for considerably less in compensation.

It is my recommendation that we not only deny his request but terminate Goodell upon completion of his present contract. As the owner of the Dallas Cowboys Football, Inc., I, Jerry Jones, present my thoughts for your consideration.
