Letter: Freedom Landing subjects veterans to unhealthy environment

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The University of Utah holds its annual Veterans Day ceremony as it honors 11 Utah veterans during a ceremony at the Olpin Union Building which was followed by a 21-cannon salute.

Freedom Landing is a residential facility for approximately 160 veterans. The Salt Lake City Housing Authority (SLCHA) manages this property, as well as several others.

Freedom Landing is where there has been a major problem since July of this year. Phone service has been nonexistent to all residential rooms. Veterans cannot call or receive calls from their medical or mental health providers. A veteran in crisis is unable to call for help. Unable to even contact the front desk. Social services and transportation to the Veterans Hospital is limited. Suggestion boxes were removed and only recently has one been replaced. No management is on the premises after 5 p.m. Outside environment is a major issue and the SLCHA should be providing security as known drug dealers frequent the area along North Temple.

These veterans pay to live at Freedom Landing and should expect the services that were offered when they moved in. Treat our veterans with respect, not an unhealthy environment. SLCHA needs to step up to the plate.
