Letter: Boy Scouts are common link to rest of nation

The LDS Church likely will not be making its decision on Scouting based either on the UtahPolicy poll or my personal opinion, but jumping ship would be a mistake. The Boy Scouts are a common link to the rest of the nation that doesn't know much about Mormons, except for a Broadway play and polygamy. Scouting signals normal in a positive way.

Scouting was a wonderful part of my growing-up experience, and my Scoutmasters were fine and dedicated men. It says something for a young man to be able to say, "I am an Eagle Scout." Yes, the LDS Church can create an alternative program, but it will deprive thousands of young men the distinction of that accomplishment, which has a certain national cachet that a single sect will never be able to replicate.

Besides, it's a redeeming credential for Democrats, lawyers and newspaper reporters, although Robert Kirby was probably a lost cause in any case.
