Join The Tribune’s editorial board

We’re expanding our editorial board to better reflect the communities we serve.

The Salt Lake Tribune is searching for community members to join its editorial board.

As a nonprofit news organization, we are committed to publishing journalism that’s more reflective of our community and that builds understanding.

One of the ways we try to do this is through the editorial board, a small group that meets weekly to discuss Utah’s most pressing issues and provide a longer view, in the form of a published editorial, on where we’re headed. Or where Utah should be headed.

Oftentimes, the editorial board is joined by guests who have expertise in certain areas, from education and government to the environment and transportation.

Opinion writer George Pyle crafts one or more editorials, which are published across Tribune platforms throughout the week, after the board meets.

On our best days, we elevate an exchange of information and ideas. We seek to ground them in longtime principles of The Tribune, such as transparency and accountability.

We’re looking to expand the board as we work to better reflect the communities we seek to serve.

Each year, we welcome a volunteer (or two!) who is eager to participate in a conversation about what’s important to Utahns. You should be curious and knowledgeable about how our state works, and you should have a willingness to ask questions. You must be open to considering a multitude of perspectives, and being a good listener is critical. You may be asked to write yourself (with coaching!), though the decision will be yours.

The board, which is separate from the newsroom, typically meets for one hour on Wednesday afternoons. Some meetings are in person, others are virtual. The position is not paid, and the commitment would be for a one-year term on the board. You must live in Utah.

If selected, you would join the board in May.

Please complete this form by March 13 if you are interested. We may not be able to get back to everyone who applies.

The Salt Lake Tribune is committed to creating a space where Utahns can share ideas, perspectives and solutions that move our state forward. We rely on your insight to do this. Find out how to share your opinion here, and email us at voices@sltrib.com.

Help The Tribune report the stories others can’t—or won’t.

For over 150 years, The Salt Lake Tribune has been Utah’s independent news source. Our reporters work tirelessly to uncover the stories that matter most to Utahns, from unraveling the complexities of court rulings to allowing tax payers to see where and how their hard earned dollars are being spent. This critical work wouldn’t be possible without people like you—individuals who understand the importance of local, independent journalism.  As a nonprofit newsroom, every subscription and every donation fuels our mission, supporting the in-depth reporting that shines a light on the is sues shaping Utah today.

You can help power this work.
