When 2024 began, I never envisioned that by fall I would be a write-in candidate for the Canyons School District Board of Education representing District 1.
My year began with my husband, six adult children and their families holding our traditional family ski-cation together at a local Utah ski resort. Immediately after our return home, my husband, Mont Millerberg, filed his application to run again for the school board, a position he first took in 2008 with the inaugural Canyons School District board.
Unfortunately, shortly after applying to run again, my husband was suddenly hospitalized and passed away at the end of February.
Mont’s passing left a vacancy, not only within our family, but also for the remainder of his current term on the school board. In March 2024, the six remaining Canyons School Board members followed the procedures outlined to fill his vacancy. After discussing it with my family, I decided to apply for this position, along with eleven other individuals.
After the candidates were interviewed by the board, I advanced to the final round and was selected to fill the remainder of Mont’s term. Ultimately, I believe I was recognized as the most qualified candidate for the vacancy because of my:
The two candidates on the ballot for District 1 this fall also applied to fill the vacancy. Neither, however, advanced from the first round of interviews.
Unfortunately, beginning in 2024, the Utah Legislature changed the candidate application deadline up from March to January. Furthermore, because local school boards are non-partisan local positions, I was unable to be added to the ballot after the initial January deadline. In order to continue the passion my late husband and I both shared for the quality education within Canyons School District, and, in order to provide strong representation for the residents and property taxpayers within District 1, I was left with no other option than to run as a write-in candidate.
During my campaign I have continued to honor the non-partisan nature of the position. I have not taken any endorsements from special interest groups or organizations with partisan agendas. Instead of a narrow focus on such issues, I am committed to fostering an educational environment where everyone can thrive.
Instead of asking for contributions from such groups, I am only asking for you to remember to write-in Kris on your ballot.
To further demonstrate my commitment to the importance of education, should I win re-election, I have committed to donate my entire salary as a board member to scholarships for local Canyons School District students.
The profiles for myself and the other local school board candidates can be found on the Utah State www.votesearch.utah.gov website or candidate websites and social media accounts, including my own at www.krismillerberg.org.
I was unable to have my name officially added to the ballot, so every vote is crucial. Please research all of the candidates and vote for the candidate you feel will best represent all students, families, educators and property taxpayers within our area.
Should you feel so inclined, please remember to write-in Kris.
