Dear Reader:
I returned to reporting from public health and environmental land advocacy working with the Bears Ears National Monument narrative to help share the stories of rural and Indigenous communities as the southern Utah reporter for The Salt Lake Tribune.
I’m glad and so grateful The Tribune took a chance and hired me to tell some of the most culturally-sensitive stories across Utah.
I’m Diné from the Navajo Nation and previously reported for the Navajo Times on general assignments and also have worked as a writer to restore protections to this cultural landscape, the ancestral homelands of my Diné people, as well as Ute, Pueblo and Paiute peoples.
Bringing cultural knowledge of Indigenous communities is necessary for fair and equitable reporting. As stories come to my desk, including our continuous reporting on Indigenous boarding schools and stories in and around the St. George area, this understanding has been critical for me.
Your support helps us tell the stories of, and for, communities in southern Utah. Scan the QR code or click here to donate.
Thank you,
Alastair
