Utah forecast: Summer, we hardly knew ye; here comes the rain (with video)

Remember summer? Treasure that memory, because Utah's forecast as the new work week begins is for cooler temperatures, thunderstorms, rain and, in the mountains, even snow.

Poet William Wordsworth call this a time of "departing summer ... an aspect tenderly illumed, the gentlest look of spring; that calls from yonder leafy shade, unfaded, yet prepared to fade."

The National Weather Service is more prosaic, but nonetheless predicted showery conditions across Utah on Tuesday. And if the inevitable transition to colder, shorter days seems unreal just mere days after near-triple-digit temperatures, there's this: Snow could dust the peaks at 9,000 feet elevation and above by Wednesday.

Along the Wasatch Front, Tuesday was to bring morning and afternoon showers and thunderclaps with daytime highs sliding into the upper-70s, down several degrees from Monday's equally wet weather. Winds of 10 to 20 mph were also expected Tuesday.

Southern Utahns expected winds of 10 to 25 mph to propel their thunderstorms and rain showers, though high temperatures on Tuesday will still make the mid-80s — just a few degrees cooler than Monday's forecast.

The good thing about all that atmospheric mixing will be the cleansing affect it has on the air we breathe. The Utah Division of Air Quality rated air quality as "green" or healthy for all areas of the state extending into the midweek.

The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website listed sagebrush at "very high" levels on its pollen index as of Monday, while chenopods and ragweed were "moderate."
