Read: Here’s the ruling in Utah’s congressional redistricting case

Judge Dianna Gibson ruled Monday night that the Utah Legislature has to redraw the state’s gerrymandered congressional boundaries.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Elizabeth Rasmussen of Better Boundaries speaks at a news conference in Salt Lake City on Monday, Aug. 25, 2025. A judge earlier ruled that the Legislature will have 30 days to adopt new maps that comply with the 2018 Better Boundaries initiative guidelines.

After years of judicial and legislative pugilism, Utah 3rd District Judge Dianna Gibson has thrown out Utah’s gerrymandered congressional maps and ordered the Legislature to draw new districts that align with what voters approved in 2018.

In a 79-page ruling Monday night, Gibson ordered that state lawmakers have 30 days to draw four new congressional districts that comply with Proposition 4, the citizen-passed initiative sponsored by Better Boundaries.

Utah’s Republican-controlled Legislature will likely contest the decision.
