Heavy weekend delays expected on I-15 northbound in Sandy

(Courtesy photo from UDOT) UDOT is adding a new “collector-distributor” system — a stretch of new freeway lanes parallel to Interstate 15 — in Sandy.

Heavy travel delays of 30 minutes or more are expected again this weekend on northbound Interstate 15 in Sandy.

Crews will reduce the freeway to two northbound lanes between 11400 South and 9400 South from 9 p.m. on Saturday through 5 a.m. on Monday.

That will allow bridge work at 10000 South (Sego Lily Drive). It is part of a project to widen I-15 from Bangerter Highway to 9400 South.

UDOT is also constructing a collector-distributor system from 9400 South to I-215. The new collector/distributor system is similar to the one between 2100 South and 900 South in Salt Lake City and has a three-lane freeway section separated from the I-15 travel lanes by a concrete barrier.

This project is expected to reduce crashes in the area by nearly 40% and reduce northbound travel times by 50%.

Also this weekend, drivers should plan for lane and ramp closures while UDOT crews complete maintenance inspections in several areas along I-15 and I-215. They include:

• Ramp from northbound I-15 to eastbound Interstate 215 in Murray. It will close on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

• I-15 in Clearfield. It will close in both directions between 650 North and 700 South from 11:59 Saturday evening until 2 a.m. Sunday.

• Ramp from westbound I-215 to southbound I-15 in Murray. It will close on Sunday between 5:30 a.m. and noon.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. Updated information is available online at udottraffic.utah.gov or UDOT Traffic app for smartphones.
