Political Cornflakes: What’s the meaning of the ellipses in the now-infamous Ukrainian call transcript?

(Evan Vucci | AP file photo) President Donald Trump meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the InterContinental Barclay New York hotel during the United Nations General Assembly, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, in New York. Below them is an excerpt of a transcript of a phone call between the two men in July where Trump asks Zelenskiy to investigate potential political rival Joe Biden. The phone call came the day after Robert Mueller testified to Congress about the findings into his investigation of Trump.

Happy Thursday!

Questions are swirling around the publicized transcript of the call between President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian president. The document released to the public contains several ellipses, fueling uncertainty about whether the punctuation marks signified missing words. A White House official has said the markings indicate a pause or “trailing off of a voice” rather than deletions. [WaPost]
