Bridge work over the next four months expected to cause daily delays on I-80 near the Salt Lake City airport

Daily delays of 10 minutes or more during key commuting hours are expected on Interstate 80 near the Interstate 215 west belt interchange for the next four months as crews work to replace some bridge decks there.

The Utah Department of Transportation is urging motorists to consider using State Route 201 as an alternative.

UDOT planned to begin the work Friday at 7:30 p.m. on I-80 bridges over the Jordan River surplus canal.

It said a lane will be closed on westbound I-80. Also, lanes will be shifted on both westbound and eastbound I-80, and drivers traveling from the airport to eastbound I-80 will need to merge into traffic sooner.

UDOT said that will create heavier than normal traffic during commute hours.

The new replacement bridge surface is designed to better handle the 71,000 vehicles per day that travel the section of freeway. Work on the project is scheduled for completion in June.
