Crowning moment: Cedar City’s Mormon temple gets Angel Moroni statue

Construction workers place a statue of the Angel Moroni on top of the Cedar City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thursday, Sep. 15, 2016 in Cedar City, Utah. Cedar City residents witnessed a rising angel this week as crews hoisted a golden Moroni statue into place atop the Mormon temple under construction there, according to an LDS Church news release.

Latter-day Saints revere Moroni as the last contributor to the church's signature scripture, the Book of Mormon, and believe he later appeared as an angel to church founder Joseph Smith.

Many LDS temples boast Moroni's iconic, horn-trumpeting likeness.

The Cedar City edifice, announced in 2013 and located at 300 S. Cove Drive, just off Interstate 15, will be Utah's 17th Mormon temple when it is finished.

A completion date has yet to be announced.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints see temples as houses of God, places they take part in their faith's highest rites, including eternal marriage.
