More than 150 Utah students selected as semifinalists for National Merit scholarships

More than 150 Utah students from around the state were selected as semifinalists for more than $31 million in National Merit scholarships.

The list, embedded below, was pared down to finalists last month. Beginning this month, approximately 7,500 scholarship winners nationwide will be notified by the the National Merit Scholarship Program.

There are three types of scholarships, and notifications will continue through mid-June.

Qualifying for the scholarships begins with taking the PSAT test, formally known as the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, offered to sophomores and juniors in high school.

Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and include the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is not-for-profit organization established in 1955. Scholarships are underwritten by the program with its own funds and by approximately 410 business organizations and higher education institutions.
