Police arrested a 25-year-old Smithfield man Thursday night in the stabbing of his father, who died shortly after being found bloody and unresponsive in the street outside the suspect's home.
Smithfield Police Chief Travis Allen said officers responded to a 5:33 p.m. 911 call reporting a fight outside 380 E. 160 South. They found the victim, 58-year-old Calvin Leon Hallstrom, unconscious on the pavement, bleeding heavily from multiple knife wounds in the neck. He was rushed to Cache Valley Hospital, but died a short time later.
A Smithfield officer and Cache County sheriff's deputy found the suspect, Shane Hallstrom, kneeling in the street a few feet away from his father. He was questioned and arrested.
Booking records show that Shane Hallstrom, 25, was being held in the Cache County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony murder.
Witnesses indicate the victim, who did not live at the Smithfield home, had arranged to meet his son there on Thursday.
"We believe they were planning to leave and spend the evening with each other,"Allen said. "At some point prior to them leaving, Shane produced a knife and stabbed Calvin multiple times in the neck."
Allen said that in addition to his own investigators, the slaying continues to be probed by detectives from the sheriff's office and neighboring Logan police.
"A motive to the attack has not been established at this point," the chief said.
