A 50-year-old Salt Lake City man died Saturday while climbing in Beef Basin Canyon, a popular climbing area in southeast Utah, the San Juan Sheriff's Office reported.
Mark Davis and a friend were rock climbing at Rambo Wall when Davis experienced some type of equipment or rope failure while rappelling down, Sheriff Rick Eldredge wrote in a press release.
Davis, who was not wearing a protective helmet, fell about 20 feet and suffered major head trauma, Eldredge said.
The sheriff's office dispatched both search and rescue crews, as well as a medical helicopter, but Davis had died by the time they arrived.
Eldredge said his office was investigating as to how the man's equipment failed.
