A Layton family of six escaped injury in a Monday morning fire that heavily damaged their home.
Layton Fire Department spokesman Doug Bitton said crews were dispatched to 174 E. 950 South about 7:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames consuming the home's deck and spreading into the attic. A father, his wife and three children had safely evacuated by the time firefighters arrived.
It took about half an hour to douse the flames, and crews were able to rescue pet fish and a toad, Bitton said.
Damages were estimated at $100,000.
The Utah Red Cross offered food, shelter and clothing aid, but the family declined.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, but appeared to have begun on the deck, perhaps from a barbecue unit.
No injuries were reported.
