Situation sparked by dispute between suspect, his girlfriend at another home.

A man held his estranged girlfriend's father hostage for more than six hours Monday before releasing the hostage and surrendering peacefully, West Valley City police reported.

Police got involved after receiving a call from the area of 7100 West and Palomino Drive (2635 South) at 7:06 a.m., reporting a man with a gun had fired several shots outside.

WVCPD spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said officers arrived to find bullet damage to a vehicle parked outside the mobile home, and the suspect and hostage barricaded inside.

While SWAT officers rushed to the scene, police asked neighbors to stay inside their homes, and also advised staff at the nearby Entheos Academy to keep their children inside until the situation was resolved.

Vainuku said the standoff stemmed from a domestic dispute between the 23-year-old suspect and his girlfriend at another home several miles away. At some point, the girl's 51-year-old father had driven the suspect home.

"That's where things escalated," Vainuku said. "Shots were fired."
