Police said one of the injured men was the suspected gunman, who was shot by a Department of Public Safety officer.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Law enforcement officers outside the State Liquor and Wine Store in Taylorsville, after a shooting that left two people injured, on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.

A man was shot inside a state liquor store in Taylorsville Thursday afternoon, and the suspected shooter was later shot by a Utah Department of Public Safety officer, police said.

Lt. Aaron Cheshire with the Taylorsville Police Department said officers were dispatched at 2:17 p.m. after a 911 caller reported an active shooter at the State Liquor and Wine Store at 4455 S. 2700 West.

The caller, who was in the parking lot, reported seeing people run into the store as a man followed behind them firing a gun, Cheshire said.

Officers arrived within about a minute, along with police from West Valley City, and found a man shooting at a person inside the store, Cheshire said.

A DPS officer who was already inside the store shot and injured the gunman, he said.

Both men were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition, Cheshire said.

The store sits among a cluster of state buildings, including a DMV office, the Utah Public Health Laboratory and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
