Backcountry skier falls near Little Cottonwood Canyon, suffers critical injuries

The person was extracted from the canyon area and flown by helicopter to a hospital, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A backcountry skier suffered critical injuries when he fell “a significant distance” at Mount Superior near Little Cottonwood Canyon, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Chris Bronson, the office’s spokesperson, said the skier, 59, was with a group of skiers, and search and rescue teams were able to quickly find him after receiving a report that he had fallen.

The man’s identity has not been released.

The Utah Department of Public Safety extracted the man from the area, and he was flown by helicopter to a hospital, according to a news release.

State Route 210, which runs up Little Cottonwood Canyon, was briefly closed to traffic in both directions, Fox 13 reported.
